Banneker Ventures and District Officials Start Construction of Rosedale Community Center WASHINGTON, DC September 30, 2009 Banneker Ventures, LLC announced today the start of construction of the Rosedale Community Center at 1701 Gales Street, NE, Washington, DC. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, surrounded by Department of Parks and Recreation Acting Director Ximena Hartsock, Chairman of the DC Council Committee on Parks and Recreation, Harry Thomas, Jr., Ward 6 Councilman Tommy Wells and dozens of Ward 6 residents, officially started construction at the site when the Mayor climbed a bulldozer, and to rousing applause, began tearing down the existing facility. The new $16M recreation center, in which Banneker serves as program manager for, was put on a fast track by the District and Banneker in order to bring this long awaited public project to the Rosedale neighborhood. In less than five months, Banneker was able to procure architect and engineering firms and complete designs for this LEED Silver facility. It was also able to solicit general contractors for the project and ultimately select a general contractor team that included a joint venture with a LSDBE general contractor as the lead. The project will include a fitness room, game room, gymnasium, kitchen, locker rooms, multipurpose room, resource room with public-use computers, senior room, spray park, staff offices, storage and a community library. Bannekers principal, Omar A. Karim, stated that " I'm excited to work with District officials and community members to bring this long awaited project to the Rosedale community. He also stated that Banneker is further pleased to be working with a professional general contracting team that includes a LSDBE general contractor as the lead." |
