Banneker Ventures Completes New Construction of Walker Jones Education Complex WASHINGTON, DC August 11, 2009 Banneker Ventures, LLC announced today the opening of the Walker Jones Education Complex at 100 L Street, N.W., Washington, DC. This $50M project, in which Banneker and its partner Regan Associates, served as program managers for, opened to rave reviews and the grand opening was attended by more than 100 community members, civic leaders and District of Columbia officials, including Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, City Administrator Neil O. Albert, Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee, and others. The Walker Jones Education Complex is the first new public school built by the Fenty administration and the Districts first facility to combine a public school, public library, recreation center, athletic fields and playgrounds. It was also the fastest public school ever built in Washington, DC. This striking new 120,000 square foot facility replaced two existing District of Columbia Public School facilities on the site and an adjacent site. The facilities include a 100,000 square foot pre-k through 8 school, containing classrooms, labs, a media center, cafeteria, stage and offices. The School shares a gymnasium with a 12,000 square foot community recreation center and new athletic fields and playgrounds, and a 6,000 square foot community library. The Education and Recreation Complex is a new model for co-locating community facilities with libraries and schools in the District. The facility was designed and built for LEED Certification. Forrester Construction and Columbia Enterprises served as general contractors for the project. |
