Banneker Ventures Joins Hundreds at Opening of Deanwood Community Center and Library WASHINGTON, DC - June 25, 2010 Banneker Ventures announced today the Grand Opening of the Deanwood Community Center and Library. The $32 million state-of-the-art community center and library was built in the Deanwood neighborhood of Ward 7, one of the least developed communities in the District of Columbia. The 63,000 square foot facility boasts an indoor swimming pool complete with the District's first ever water slide, locker rooms, computer room, gymnasium, full service kitchen, game room, senior services area, state of the art music studio, fitness center, and 7,000 square foot library with 20 computers, space for children's activities, space for teens to study and capacity for 25,000 books. It is the largest recreation center ever built in the District of Columbia. This facility is expected to receive LEED Silver certification. The ribbon-cutting ceremony marking today's Grand Opening was attended by more than 500 members of the community, District of Columbia Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, members of the District of Columbia Council, community leaders and others. Omar Karim, President of Banneker, remarked that ‘Deanwood Community Center and Library is an example of what can happen when you have great city leadership coupled with a great development team and great community input.’ He went on to state that ‘I am proud to have worked on such an exciting project which brings the largest recreation center ever built in the District to Ward 7. This community has long deserved such a facility and being able to deliver it to this community is something that I will never forget.’ |
